Privacy Policy
The short version
- No account. There’s nothing to sign up for or log in to.
- No ads, no tracking and no analytics SDK.
- Your history, saved products, rules and family profiles are stored only on your iPhone.
- To look up a product, only the barcode number or your search text is sent to Open Food Facts.
- Label photos are read on your iPhone and never uploaded.
- Apple Health: Fineprint can add a serving’s nutrition that you choose to log. It reads nothing from Health, and Health data never leaves your device.
- If you buy Pro, RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase history so the purchase works. It isn’t linked to you or used for tracking.
Who’s responsible
Fineprint is made by Levani Topchishvili, an individual developer based in Georgia (“I”, “me”). This policy applies to the Fineprint iPhone app and to this website. You can reach me at levan.topchishvili9@gmail.com.
What Fineprint doesn’t collect
Fineprint has no user accounts, shows no advertising, and contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting SDKs. It doesn’t track you across apps or websites. I don’t receive your name, email address, contacts, location, photos, health information or device identifiers from the app, and I don’t sell or share data with anyone.
What stays on your iPhone
Your scan history, saved products, the rules you choose and any family profiles you create are stored only on your iPhone, inside Fineprint’s own storage. They aren’t sent to me or to any server, and there’s no cloud sync.
Like other app data, this information may be included in your device backups (for example iCloud Backup), depending on your own settings. Apple handles those backups under its privacy policy; I have no access to them.
Product lookups and Open Food Facts
Product information comes from Open Food Facts, a non-profit, open food database. When you scan or type a barcode, Fineprint sends that barcode number to Open Food Facts to fetch the product. When you search by name, it sends the text you typed. Product photos shown in the app are loaded from Open Food Facts’ image servers.
These requests contain only the barcode or the search text, plus a generic User-Agent that identifies the app (“Fineprint” and its version), not you. Fineprint doesn’t attach any account, device identifier, rules, profiles or history to them. As with any connection to a website, Open Food Facts’ servers can see the IP address the request comes from; Open Food Facts handles that under its own privacy policy.
If you choose to open openfoodfacts.org from the app to add or correct a product, you’re using their website directly, under their terms.
Camera, photos and label reading
Fineprint asks for camera access to scan barcodes and to photograph ingredient labels. If you pick an existing image, the photo picker gives Fineprint only the photo you select. These photos are used for two things: finding a barcode, and reading the text of an ingredient list.
Text is read on your iPhone with Apple’s Vision framework. Label photos and barcode photos are never uploaded to me, to Open Food Facts or to anyone else. If a barcode is found in a photo, only the barcode number is used for the lookup described above.
Apple Health
Logging to Apple Health is an optional Pro feature, and it only happens when you choose to log a serving. With your permission, Fineprint writes the nutrition of that serving to Health: energy, protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, sugar, fibre, sodium and caffeine.
Fineprint doesn’t read any data from Health. What it writes stays in Health on your device, under Apple’s protections; it’s never sent to me, to RevenueCat or to any other party, and it’s never used for advertising. You can change or remove Fineprint’s access at any time in the Health app or in Settings.
Purchases and RevenueCat
Fineprint Pro is sold through the App Store. Apple processes the payment; I never see your payment details or Apple Account information.
Fineprint uses RevenueCat to manage in-app purchases, check whether Pro is unlocked and restore purchases. RevenueCat receives:
- an anonymous, randomly generated app user ID, and
- your purchase history for Fineprint (which product, when it was bought, and its status, such as active or expired).
This is used only for app functionality, namely unlocking Pro and restoring it. It isn’t linked to your identity and isn’t used for tracking or advertising. RevenueCat processes it on my behalf under its own privacy policy.
Information Apple provides
If you’ve opted in to sharing analytics with app developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may show me aggregated, anonymous usage statistics and crash reports in App Store Connect. Fineprint itself contains no analytics code. You can turn this off in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Emailing support
If you write to me, I receive your email address and whatever your message contains. I use it only to answer you and to fix what you report. I don’t add you to any mailing list and don’t pass your message on.
This website
This site is a set of static pages on GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies and loads no analytics, trackers, third-party scripts or web fonts. GitHub, as the host, may log technical details such as IP addresses for security and operation, as described in the GitHub Privacy Statement.
Children
Fineprint isn’t directed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. Since the app collects no personal information from anyone, there’s nothing held about children either. If you believe a child has sent me personal information by email, contact me and I’ll delete it.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your data: clear your history in the app, remove rules or profiles, or delete Fineprint to remove everything it stored on your iPhone.
- Apple Health: remove Fineprint’s access, or delete the entries it wrote, in the Health app.
- Camera and photos: change access at any time in Settings › Fineprint.
- Purchase records: email me to ask for the anonymous purchase record held by RevenueCat to be deleted. Your App Store purchase history is kept by Apple.
- Other requests: depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data. Fineprint holds almost none, so these requests are simple; email me and I’ll help.
Changes
If this policy changes, I’ll update this page and its effective date. If a change meaningfully affects how data is handled, I’ll also mention it in the app’s release notes.
